School and Group Visits

Rays Farm is a real family affair and opened to the public in 1990. We love our little piece of Shropshire and want to share it with as many adults and children as possible. We actively encourage visitors to connect with nature, learn about the environment and show how we can look after it for future generations.

We offer group and school visits from the Early Years Foundation stage through to Key Stage 1 and 2, however, we are always eager to discuss how we can personalise the time you spend with us.

About Rays Farm

Nestled in the beautiful Shropshire countryside, you will find a peaceful retreat at Rays Farm. The Farm has been owned by Frank and Rose Cartwright since 1982. However, it has a history that dates back to 1500AD.

Today, Rays Farm spans 17 acres across pastures, barns and magical woodland. Until recently it covered 200 acres and was predominantly a dairy farm employing the local community.

Why Rays Farm?

We’ve highlighted the areas of Rays Farm that make us special for groups and schools.

Hands on Animal Encounters

In the small animal barn, meet friendly rabbits, guinea pigs and our latest baby goats. In the Goat Paddock, walk amongst our friendly goats for a very close, supervised encounter.

After your experience, warm hand washing is on-hand and your group will be pro-actively reminded of this on your visit.

Plenty More Animal Friends.

Rays Farm is home to the largest, privately owned, collection of Owls in Shropshire, enabling children to see some of the largest Owls in the World.

Plus in the paddocks, children can meet miniature ponies, donkeys, alpaca and of course, Millie our Llama. As part of your visit, look out for the deer, including Father Christmas’ reindeer and our naughty pigs, Sophie and Daphne.

Woodland Walks and Sculpture Trail

Our very own Fairytale Forest is classified as ancient woodland, with many native broadleaf trees and a fast flowing stream. Providing a varied biodiversity, the fauna and flora changes with the seasons.

Visitors can choose from two walks; the 275 metre trail takes you past Merlin, his dragon friend sculpture, as well as 18 other woodcarvings. Alternatively the longer 1 mile trail, will take you past 30 sculptures.

Within the woodland, we have a den building area with scramble ropes and a look out platform for adventurous children, and if you are lucky, in the spring, you may even see some young deer hiding the scrub.

Bird Feeding Station

An activity that ticks many boxes. In the covered bird feeding station, children can count and identify a range of our wild visiting feathered friends. They will watch them feed and if they can sit quietly, spot our greedy squirrels too.

Tell a story in the Giants Chair

Near our ancient woods is Oscars’ Chair. Oscar is of course our resident Giant, not seen very often although visitors have reported hearing him sneeze occasionally! Many groups find this a perfect base for story time or photo opportunities.
